Stolen Retransmission: Pirates Face up to Six Years in Prison
Cyberpolice detained a resident of Kirovohrad region who illegally sold subscriptions to a number of TV channels, including those belonging to Media Group Ukraine: TV channels “Ukraine”, “Indigo TV”, “NLO TV”. The company lodged a complaint with the police.
According to the cyber police, the resident of the region held a position of authority. Using her position and equipment at her company, she illegally broadcast Ukrainian TV channels. Subscription to such services cost UAH 95 per month, and the audience was almost 4000 people. Thus, the person received about UAH 400,000 per month.
Illegal retransmission infringed the copyrights of one of Ukraine’s largest media holdings. The amount of damage is being determined.
Police searched the office and seized the equipment and documents indicating the person’s involvement in illegal activities. Physical evidence is sent for examination.
The investigation is ongoing within the criminal proceeding under Part 3 of Article 176 (Infringement of Copyright and Related Rights) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article provides for imprisonment for up to six years.
